I found a text that I was looking for, it needed correcting, but I couldn't work out how I could do it. Is there a way of volunteering to correct badly scanned texts. I would love to assist.

There is a project called Distributed Proofreaders at http://www.pgdp.net/ - they scan books and obtain scans from other sites like archive.org and then have volunteers proofread the text. The texts are then published through Project Gutenberg and then end up back here, in a roundabout way: https://archive.org/details/gutenberg

It's an ideal way to get involved because the task is split up into individual pages which are a much less substantial time investment than taking on whole books at a time.

Alternatively, join in the proofreading at English Wikisource (https://en.wikisource.org/wiki). The main difference between Distributed Proofreaders and Wiksource is that on Wikisource the original scans are available so that a reader can check the original text.

From Jeff Kaplan’s post in another thread (Mr Kaplan is an IA staff):

we're well aware that, to be generous, OCR is less than perfect. and you're correct that at scale we would not be able to manually review or correct the abbyy OCR. at this point the main suggestions are to crowdsource (which we do not have the manpower to manage) or have interested folks upload corrected files to new items and use good metadata so that the corrected file items appear high in search results.

Diane,

Just make the correction and upload the new version. You can mention the link for the original version in you description. I have done this and others have also translated some materials which I posted.
